Support for Young People Aged 16 to 24

Helping young people build confidence, develop skills and move towards a positive future

Pathways Berwick supports economically inactive young people aged 16 to 24 who need help to re-engage with education, training or employment.

We provide flexible, personalised support that helps young people recognise their strengths, overcome barriers and take practical steps towards their goals.

Who is the programme for?

Economically inactive means that a person is not currently employed and is not actively looking for or immediately available for work.

For this programme, young people must:

• be aged 16 to 24;

• have not been in education, employment or training during the past four weeks; and

• not be due to start employment, education or training within the next two weeks.

The programme may be suitable for young people who have become disengaged after leaving mainstream education or who are experiencing personal, social, health or practical barriers.

Personalised support

Every young person begins with an initial assessment to identify their:

• skills and strengths;

• interests and aspirations;

• education and employment goals;

• support needs; and

• barriers to progression.

We then work with the young person to create an individual learning and progression plan with clear, achievable goals.

 Prepare for employment

Our employability support can include:

• creating or improving a CV;

• completing job applications;

• searching for suitable opportunities;

• preparing for interviews;

• practising interview techniques;

• understanding workplace expectations;

• work-related projects;

• vocational tasters;

• volunteering opportunities; and

• supported work experience.

We can also work with employers to encourage appropriate induction, mentoring and reasonable adjustments.

Explore education and training

Pathways Berwick can help young people explore and apply for:

• college courses;

• apprenticeships;

• traineeships;

• vocational programmes;

• specialist training; and

• other suitable progression opportunities.

Support can continue during the transition into a new placement, helping the young person remain engaged and manage any challenges.

Overcome barriers

We understand that practical and personal difficulties can prevent young people from moving forward.

Support may include help with:

• travel and transport;

• identification documents;

• access to technology;

• interview or work clothing;

• low confidence and anxiety;

• mental health and wellbeing;

• SEND and additional learning needs;

• housing or financial difficulties; and

• previous negative experiences of education.

Where specialist support is required, we can signpost or refer young people to relevant health, housing, benefits, substance misuse, wellbeing and community services.

Flexible and supportive

Every young person’s journey is different.

Our flexible, relationship-based approach allows young people to begin with short, manageable activities and gradually increase their attendance and participation as their confidence develops.

Regular one-to-one mentoring and pastoral support help young people stay motivated, recognise their progress and overcome setbacks.

Working in partnership

Pathways Berwick works alongside:

• young people and their families;

• Jobcentre Plus;

• local employers;

• colleges and training providers;

• local authorities;

• health and wellbeing services; and

• community and voluntary organisations.

This joined-up approach helps ensure that young people receive the right support at the right time.

• improved confidence, motivation and wellbeing;

• increased participation and regular attendance;

• stronger English, mathematics and digital skills;

• relevant qualifications and certificates;

• improved employability and workplace skills;

• greater resilience and independence; and

• successful progression into sustained education, employment, an apprenticeship or training.
